In most process-control applications, There are two systems which monitor and manage the process. One is a Distributed Control System (DCS) andthe other is a safety system such as the Tricon controller. These two systems are usually isolated, but share a common operator interface. Distributed Control Systems are designed to allow highly effective communication with the process operator, who must be informed of the state of the process at all times. This is desirable for safety systems as well, but was not feasible in the past because of the type of technology used to implement these systems.
